UNBC

  • Magnifying Black Voices pilot program has been renewed for 2025.
  • The program was awarded the President’s Award for Creative Initiative at UNBC and the Community EDI Impact Award from the local Afro-Caribbean Society of Northern BC (ACSNBC).
  • UNBC hosts one of six nationwide regional Black Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hubs (BEKH).
  • The Researcher excellence marketing program has been designed to address inequities in amplifying equity deserving researchers, including Black faculty.
  • The Office of Equity and Inclusion launched the Count Us In data initiative and framework to focus on systemic inequities.
  • The Office of Equity and Inclusion continues to support the Afro-Caribbean Students Association (ACSA) by funding initiatives, providing event support, and the amplification of student achievements.
  • The Educational EDIA Framework has beendeveloped by the Office of Equity and Inclusion at UNBC.

UVIC

  • Indigenous and BPoC Knowledge Connection Fund – provide course release for BIPOC faculty spending significant service time working on EDI issues.

the UBC President’s Task Force on Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence (ARIE TF) has concluded its work and submitted its final report which includes 54 comprehensive recommendations for addressing various forms of racism and related forms of discrimination

Blackness Recommendations

 Foster belonging for Black students, staff and faculty at UBC
 Implement the proposal of a holistic program from UBC Black Law Students’ Association, Allard School of Law
 Establish an effective process for receiving and handling Black race-based complaints
 Improve Black student mental health and wellness
 Establish Black studies and elevate Blackness in the academy Develop a comprehensive Blackness Strategic
 Plan Transform recruitment and retention of Black staff and faculty at UBC
 Addressing workload and lack of support for Black staff and faculty
 Addressing anti-Black racism and systemic discrimination in UBC Medicine

Key recommendations from the Blackness Committee include:
a. The need to foster a sense of belonging for Black students, staff and faculty at UBC
b. Development of Black race-based complaint system
c. Recruitment and retention of Black staff and faculty.
Two recommendations of note presented by the Committee include the following: 1) proposal of a holistic program from UBC Black law students; and 2) the need to address anti-Black racism and systemic discrimination at the Faculty of Medicine.
